Free Bubble Burst Blanket Crochet Pattern

Children of all ages will love this interactive bubble burst blanket with fun bubbles ready to pop and burst. It’s great fun for jumping on at playtime or cuddling up at bedtime. I have found my daughter has been calmer winding down in the evenings as she has something to occupy her while cuddling up with a movie.

Bubble burst blanket description

The bubble burst blanket is made up of granny square style bubbles that can be popped out either side. You can make as many squares as you like to make a bigger or smaller bubble blanket. The border is made up of smaller bursting bubbles made using the popcorn stitch.

How it’s made

The bubble burst blanket is easy-intermediate skill level. You will need to know all the basic crochet stitches plus the popcorn stitch. However, instructions for the popcorn stitch are included and they’re easy enough when you get the hang of them. The bubble squares are ‘joined as you go’ and the are crocheted together, not sewn. To make the bubble burst blanket I used aran/worsted yarn and a 5mm crochet hook. I used one 100g skein of each colour, plus one extra skein for a little extra on the border and joining the columns.

Row 13

Skip this step for 1st square in each column as you will have nothing to join it to.

  • sl st into corner ch spaces of both squares
  • sl st inside loops together (BLO & FLO) x 16
  • sl st into corner ch spaces of both squares
  • Fasten off

Continue rounds 1 – 13 until you have 7 columns, each with 6 squares.

Joining Columns

You will not see the yarn used to join the columns on the front of the blanket. You will see it on the reverse. If you need to save yarn for the border, use the colour you have most of for this step.

  • Place columns together with right sides facing each other
  • sl st in corner ch spaces of both squares
  • sl st outside loops together (FLO & BLO) x 16
  • sl st in corner ch spaces of both squares
  • Repeat across the entire row
  • Fasten off
  • Repeat until all columns are joined

Border

Use leftover yarn and randomly switch colours throughout the border.

Round 1
  • Attach yarn to any corner ch space
  • *2sc in ch space, sc x 16 in all dc stitches, 2sc in ch space*
  • Repeat between *’s all the way across
  • ch x 3 & turn corner
  • Repeat for the other 3 sides
  • sl st to first st & ch
Round 2
  • *(sc x 3, PC) repeat until you reach corner
  • sc, ch x 2, sc in corner ch space*
  • Repeat between the *’s 3 more times
  • sl st to first st & ch
Round 3
  • *sc in every stitch until you reach corner
  • sc, ch x 2, sc in corner ch space*
  • Repeat between *’s 3 more times
  • sl st to first st & fasten off
