Black cat kids onesie crochet pattern

Thanks for checking out my black cat kids’ onesie crochet pattern. I wanted to make my daughter a nice warm Halloween costume this year and came up with the black cat onesie. The best part is that it can also be worn as pyjamas all year round too! Unlike a costume she would wear once then outgrow by next Halloween, she can really get some use out of this one and wear it again and again.

The black cat kids’ onesie is suitable for children aged 2 to 10 years. The crochet pattern includes 8 different sizes and has handy tips on how to alter the length of the torso, legs and sleeves so you can easily adjust for the perfect fit. The all-in-one pyjamas is designed to be loose fitting for comfort. It can also be worn as a Halloween costume. The hooded onesie is warm and cosy and features fun cat’s ears, tail and whiskers.

How it’s made

The black cat kids’ onesie crochet pattern is easy skill level. You will need to know all your basic crochet stiches as well as having good sewing skills. The onesie itself is made in one-piece. The cat tail and ears are then sewn on at the end. You’ll also need some basic tapestry skills for the cat’s whiskers. To make the crochet jumpsuit I used aran (weight 4) yarn in 2 colours, 5 buttons and a small amount of toy stuffing for the tail. I also used a 5mm crochet hook and tapestry needle. Gauge is very important for this crochet pattern. It is essential you make a swatch before you start and check your gauge on the garment after each section. Skipping this step could result in your onesie not fitting your child.

Abbreviations

ch – chain

sl st – slip stich

sp – space

st / sts – stitch / stitches

sc – single crochet

sc2tog – single crochet 2 together

2sc – increase (2 single crochet in 1 space)

hdc – half double crochet

hdc2tog – decrease (half double crochet 2 together)

2hdc – increase (2 half double crochet in 1 space)

dc – double crochet

2dc – increase (2 double crochet in 1 space)

RS – right side (outside garment)

WS – wrong side (inside garment)

Gauge / tension

Gauge is important as everyone crochets with a different tension. Therefore, if your 2” swatch doesn’t match up you can change your hook size to suit your tension. Completing your gauge swatch is very important for this pattern. I also recommend checking your gauge on the garment after each section. If your gauge doesn’t match its likely your garment will not fit.

5mm hook: 2” x 2” = 6 rows of 7 hdc

Measurements are of completed onesies, not the child. The onesies are loose fitting for comfort. Measurements are in inches. Please read in the format – age (2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9)

Hip circumference – 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31

Underarm to wrist – 8.5, 9.5, 10.5, 11, 11.5, 12, 12.5, 13

Groin to ankle – 10, 11.25, 13, 14.75, 16.5, 18, 19.75, 21.25

All cuffs – 1

Pattern notes

  • I do not count finishing slip stitches or chains in my stitch count.
  • Stitches separated with a comma are to be made in separate spaces. eg. (sc, dc) would mean sc in first stitch then dc in the next stitch. eg. (2hdc, hdc x 2) would mean 2hdc in first stitch, 1hdc in second stitch, then 1hdc in next stitch.
  • I chose to change colours while completing the last stitch on the previous row. You can use this method or your preferred colour changing method.
  • This crochet pattern is written in age 2-3 and other sizes are written in brackets in the following format:

Age 2-3 (3-4,4-5,5-6,6-7,7-8,8-9,9-10)

Example: hdc x 20 (21,22,23,24,25,26,27) will mean hdc x 20 for age 2-3, hdc x 21 for age 3-4, hdc x 22 for age 4-5 and so on.

If there is only one number it applies to all sizes.
