Bella the butterfly applique crochet pattern
Thanks for checking out my Bella the butterfly crochet pattern. As you may know I have a passion for designing appliques lately and am making them to fill up my Busy Lizzy patchwork blanket. I want to create some spring themed appliques and thought a cute butterfly would be perfect. My daughter loves it and has named this butterfly Bella.
Butterfly applique description
The butterfly applique is quite big and measures 14cm wide by 15cm high. Her wings are made with hearts and her body and head are made in separate pieces giving a lovey 3D effect to the crochet applique. The butterfly has a cartoon like design making it appealing and fun for children. You can sew the applique onto almost anything to create a fun Spring theme.
How it’s made
The butterfly applique crochet pattern is easy skill level. You will need to know all your basic crochet stiches as well as the bobble stitch. You’ll also need to know how to increase, work into a magic ring and be confident as changing colours. The pattern involves some sewing and tapestry. Overall its a very fast easy crochet pattern that’s great for using up scraps of yarn. I used 6mm safety eyes for my butterfly applique but you could use a knot if you preferred. To make the butterfly I used DK (weight 3) yarn. I used a 4mm crochet hook. The crochet butterfly applique uses approximately 12g (36m/41yd) of yarn.

sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
dc – double crochet
tr – treble crochet
2sc / 2dc / 2tr – increase (2 stitches in one space)
5dc – increase/shell (5 double crochet in one space)

Bobble stitch instructions
- Yarn over, insert hook and pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops on the hook
- Repeat 4 more times
- Yarn over and pull through all 6 loops on the hook
Gauge / tension
Gauge is important as everyone crochets with a different tension. Therefore, if your 2” swatch doesn’t match up you can change your hook size to suit your tension.
4mm hook – 2” x 2” = 7 rows of 9 hdc
Finished size
14cm wide x 15cm high
Pattern notes
I do not count chains or finishing slip stitches in my stitch count. Numbers in brackets are the number of rows/stitches.
Stitches separated with a comma are to be made in separate spaces. eg. (sc, 2hdc) would mean sc in first stitch then 2 hdc in the next stitch. eg. (sc x 2, 2hdc) would mean sc in first stitch, sc in second stitch, then 2 hdc in next stitch.
Supplies
You will need the following supplies to complete the crochet project (links will take you directly to my recommended supplies)
